Pep Guardiola: Catching Liverpool Is 'Unrealistic'

Dec 30, 2019 1:09 PM

Pep Guardiola said that Manchester City could not catch Liverpool this season, instead choosing to focus on upgrading the team for next year.

"It's unrealistic to think about it [catching Liverpool]," said Guardiola. "When a team has the numbers that Liverpool has why should we think about it, when we are 14 [points] or 17 behind? Prepare, play good, be as close as possible, play the knockouts and prepare for next season. Next season we will be here and hopefully we can do better."

Liverpool are currently 13 points ahead of City, with a match in hand.

Harvey Elliott 'Not Too Far Away' From Liverpool First Team

Dec 18, 2019 2:59 PM

Harvey Elliott is close to breaking into Liverpool's first team following an impressive performance in a 5-0 Carabao Cup loss to Aston Villa.

Liverpool played their youngest team ever in the match with the senior side competing in the Club World Cup.

The 16-year-old has made 3 appearances for the first team this season.

"He's not too far away because he trains with our first team on a regular basis," Critchley told a news conference. "He's had first-team exposure already, the manager and staff think a lot of him. I thought he was a constant threat all night, a really good outlet for us. But he was reliant on a lot of the players getting the ball to him and I thought the service to him was top class as well."

Barcelona To Complain To Spanish FA After Not Getting Penalty

Dec 14, 2019 5:01 PM

Barcelona will send a VAR complain to the Spanish FA after getting denied a late penalty versus Real Sociedad, according to ESPN.

The match ended in a 2-2 draw.

Gerard Pique appeared to be dragged down in the box during the play in question. The referee did not refer to VAR in his decision to not call a penalty.

"There's always going to be controversy. For their penalty, there's a clash [between two of us]. Maybe I have grabbed [Llorente] but if you set the bar there it's going to be difficult [to remain consistent]," said Sergio Busquets after the match.

Pep Guardiola: Catching Up To Liverpool Is Not Realistic

Dec 8, 2019 12:29 PM

Pep Guardiola said that Manchester City catching Liverpool was no longer realistic following their 2-1 loss to Manchester United.

City are now 14 points behind Liverpool.

"We think about what we have to do and the next game - it is not realistic to think about catching up. Obviously it is so difficult because the opponents have had 16 games with 15 victories and they are on an incredible run and sometimes we have dropped points. But our duty, and what you have to do, is continue," said Guardiola following the match.

City will have to win their remaining 22 matches to reach their point total from last season.
